I always get nervous when local authors send me copies of their novels for review. And I was even more nervous when Christine Bernard send me an early copy of her debut novel, Unravel, which launched last Friday. We’ve chatted a few times online, my banting journey was featured in her online magazine, Flat White Concepts and I was her Secret Santa in a blogger Secret Santa a couple of years ago!

I needn’t have been, it was a solid read!

Rose Madison is of sound mind, with a sharp focus and a willingness to succeed. At only twenty-three, she’s already won an award for her short story, and has been hailed as the next big thing in the literary world. She’s beautiful, funny, intelligent, and comes from a wealthy and successful family. It’s clear to all, including herself, that her future looks bright and promising.

Why then, does the perfect Rose Madison start to slowly lose her mind?

This is a story of a young woman in her prime, clutching at the remains of sanity

The story is gripping, from the get go, and at times extremely eery, if not a little predictable, or at least, I suspected the plot twist from early on, but then I couldn’t put the book down because I was desperate to know if I was right!

When the story first started, I loved Rose. She seemed like a nice, kind, intelligent girl, she was easy to relate to and easy to like, but as the story unfolds and her sanity begins to unravel, she becomes a really difficult character to like. At times, I wanted to give her a snot klap! But that is the nature of mental illness. I also felt extremely sorry for her as she became more and more isolated in her insanity.

I love a good psychological thriller and this was a goodie! This was a well written novel, I enjoyed it and I look forward to reading more of Christine’s novels.
