Oreo’s, the worlds most loved cookie, or is it a biscuit??? Recently conducted it’s very own study in an attempt to better understand the dynamics within South African families. Β The results of the study found that there are three main elements that affect South African families: time constraints, the father/child relationship and what a child needs from a family. Given our recent challenges with Hannah, I was most interested in the third element, what a child needs from a family and this is what the study found to be the basic needs of a child from it’s family:

  • They need to be able to trust their parents, feel like they belong and won’t be abandoned.
  • They need a sense of being rooted and grounded.
  • They need to be taught values and beliefs.
  • They need boundaries and appropriate discipline.
  • They need to learn interpersonal skills.
  • They need to develop a sense of competence and cope within the school environment.
  • They need to develop abstract thoughts.
  • They need to learn the value of nature, animals and the planet

But what really stood out for me, was the final paragraph in the study, something we all need to be reminded of from time to time:

And that is exactly what this survey has shown… raising a child, regardless of whether it is within a traditional nuclear family or one that has single parents, means creating moments; and the time for these moments; to bond with them and to teach them things that life needs parents to teach children.
