I’ve made it to the 20kg loss mark! Never in my life did I believe this would be possible for me. I really couldn’t believe my eyes when I got on the scale yesterday morning and realized what I’ve achieved. When I think about all the money I have spent on dieting, on weight loss aids, on groups like Weigh Less, Weight Watchers and most expensively at dietitians, I can’t help but feel a little angry. All that time I was beating myself up because of my failures when I’d simply been following the wrong advice.
I mean, seriously, you can’t argue with these results:
I still have a ways to go, I want to lose another 21kg’s and preferably still this year so I’m not done, not by a long shot. Most people are horrified when I tell them how much I still want to lose but the reality is, according to my BMI, I am still obese with a BMI count of 31. When I achieve my goal of 77kg’s, my BMI will be a healthy and perfectly normal 24.5 BMI points. That will still put me at 7kg’s more than what I was when I was in my early twenties, but I reckon at almost 42, that’s probably a reasonable goal.
I really believe that both Walter and I have fully embraced this lifestyle and I can’t see it being something we stop doing. It’s simply become a completely natural and only way for us to eat now. We have no desire to cheat and on the odd occasion when we have cheated our of necessity (lunch at a friend etc) both of us are sick within hours of the carb/sugar laden meal. Walter immediately reverts back to his blinding headaches and I get very dizzy and my IBS returns almost instantly.
I know a lot of people complain that on LCHF they struggle with cravings but I have observed that these tend to be the folks who cheat regularly. And guess what guys? Sugar is HIGHLY addictive and has the same effect on brain chemicals as any other addictive substance. I’ve done a lot of reading up and my own research into this topic and the effects are astounding. And the problem is that even when you think you’re making healthy choices, the majority of low fat and fat free foods are laden with? SUGAR! Check out your food labels next time you’re shopping, even look at products like low fat and fat free yoghurts and milk and note the names of all the sugars that appear. Because sugar has over 50 different names!
I think the secret to our success was that in the first few weeks of banting we really focused on breaking our sugar addictions. We both struggled with Keto flu in the first week but after that it simply got easier and easier as the craving became a thing of the past with no desire to eat those foods any more.
