You know what I got for Christmas? Fat! I got fat! Wait, who am I kidding, I was fat in August already, but I managed to conceive a rather large food baby over the Christmas holidays.
Carbs glorious carbs
I blame my moms baking skills! It’s the first Christmas I’ve spent with my family, in Cape Town, in about 4 years and my taste buds made the most of it. Not even my #festivefitnotfat journey could stand up to the sugar-laden, carby treats my mom had whipped up.
I watched as my stomach bloated and my food baby grew over the course of the 10 days and I knew I was going to have to do something drastic when I got home to rid myself of my huge bloated belly. Since I started following a low carb high fat lifestyle 4 years ago, I have noticed how carbs, particularly wheat based carbs bloat my stomach and my face.
I got on the scale when we got home on Thursday morning and was horrified by what the scale told me. Actually, that’s a bit of a lie, I knew it would be bad, the scale simply confirmed what I suspected. I had managed to gain 4.6kg’s in under 10 days. Proving once again that what Prof. Noakes says is true – you can’t outrun a bad diet!
I had tried with my #festivefitnotfat and I had failed to outrun that bad diet. It was now time to get serious about getting back into our routine of healthy eating but I wanted to set myself a challenge, I wanted to start off the New Year being back at my pre-holiday weight, no mean feat, considering I had literally 4 days to do it!
Juicing & Fasting
I opted to start fasting immediately. Fasting is especially effective in rapid weight loss for those of us who are following a ketogenic diet. You can find out more about intermittent fasting and low carb high fat here. But basically what it does is that it puts you rapidly into a fat burning state. I put this theory to the test over the past few days and can say that it worked for me. I’d weigh myself when I woke and then again during the course of the day and instead of seeing that slight increase on the scale, my weight was actually dropping during the course of the day.
So here is what I did:
- I ate my last meal for the evening before
- No breakfast so I was essentially fasting for 18 hours at a time.
- I’d break my fast with a green detox juice at midday.
- I’d eat a high-fat banting dinner before
- No alcohol or sugar-free cool drinks, just water coffee
I have lost 3,1kg’s in just two days! YASS!!!!!!
The Juice Recipe
So here is the recipe for everyone who has been asking…..
- 2x Green Apples
- 3x Kale Leaves or a handful of spinach
- 1x chunk of peeled, fresh ginger
- 1/2 peeled lemon
- 3x sticks of celery
- 1x whole cucumber
- 2x cups of water
I roughly chopped all the ingredients and put them in the Greenis with the water and ran the juicing cycle. This recipe makes quite a few servings of juice, so I stored mine in sealed bottles in the fridge and added organic collagen powder just before serving.
