If you follow me on social media, you’ll know that we got to spend the most fabulous weekend away this past weekend at Hunters Rest in Rustenburg. And if you’re not following me on social media, then why not? <insert smiley emoji here>

Looks like the break away was just what I needed to get my writing mojo back. I’m sure the peaceful surroundings, incredible hospitality and the beautiful backdrop of the Magaliesburg Mountains all played a part. I spent the time there feeling inspired and came back and immediately created this little video of our break away, check it out:

Our Room

We were booked into a standard family suite, which unbeknownst to us before arrival, is also self catering and if you book as a package, it’s also inclusive of the full buffet breakfast and a round of golf on the golf course. The family suite was clean and comfortable and the unit we had seemed either new or recently refurbished. It consisted of two bedrooms, the kids room had a bunk bed in it, with a three quarter bed at the bottom and a single on the top. The main room also had the most deliciously comfortable king sized bed, was air conditioned and had plenty of cupboard space and a flat screen TV with glorious views from our patio which housed a built in braai. The bathroom was pièce de résistance! It had a HUGE shower with glass sliding doors, large enough that Hannah insisted we take family showers each evening. Twin basins and a beautiful roll top bath. It really was quite stunning.

The Facilities

I was a little concerned about the weather but needn’t have been. With it being so close to Rustenburg, it was deliciously warm the entire time we were there which meant that we could make full use of the facilities, including tennis, bicycles, golf, Putt Putt, a massive kids playground, not to mention the MASSIVE swimming pool and two smaller kids pools. Walter and I literally spent most of the time lazing around the pool, sipping G&T’s while the girls swam their hearts out. I loved the fact that the resort is so very family orientated and the kids made loads of spent and spent hours splashing and playing with their new friends in the pool while we got to relax with a book and have uninterrupted conversations under thatch umbrellas! The uninterrupted conversations was probably one of the biggest treats, if you have kids, you know this barely ever happens!

The Food

If self catering isn’t your thing, you can also dine in the restaurant. We ate breakfast daily in the restaurant and had light lunches in the outdoor lounge area. The hotel serves off an à la carte menu throughout the day and into the evenings or for dinner, you can eat in the main dining room from a dinner buffet which we did the one night too.

The Spa

Did I mention there’s a spa there? This may very well have been my most favorite part of the entire weekend! The spa is just so unexpectedly beautiful and tranquil and with so much attention to detail that goes a long way in creating the perfectly relaxing ambiance. Walter had a back and neck massage on the Friday and his only complaint was that the time passed to quickly because he was enjoying it so much. I booked myself in for a three hour session on the Saturday afternoon that included a Jacuzzi, a full body scrub, a full body massage, a head massage and a mini facial and I all but floated out of the spa once it was over! Also, guys the pricing was just pretty incredible. They have loads of packages and stand alone treatments to choose from, so whether you’re after a relaxing few hours on your own, a romantic couples treatment or simply to pamper and spoil yourself with a few friends, they have you covered! Oh and I should mention, they have THE MOST adorable kiddies nail bar too!

We had the most incredible time. So much so that Hannah actually cried on Sunday night and asked when we can go back. And we will go back and here’s why:

What we loved about Hunters Rest:

  • It’s just over an hour outside Johannesburg
  • It’s well priced and good value for money
  • Self catering option
  • Outstanding hospitality
  • Comfortable, neat and clean rooms
  • Loads of things to do inside the resort
  • Loads of attractions & places to visit and see just outside the resort too
  • Very family orientated
  • Relaxed and casual

Walter and I discussed it and honestly, there is only one area where I think Hunters Rest could use an improvement and that’s with a dedicated waiter at the pool area. It’s difficult with little kids, when one of us was at the spa or off on an activity, to supervise our children in the pool and find a waiter to order something to drink. In the end, the parents around the pool teamed up and we took turns watching each others kids while one scurried off into the hotel to find a waiter to order waters and drinks etc.

But other than that one small thing, the weekend was utter perfection!

Thank you Fortis Hotels and Hunters Rest for the most amazing weekend away, it was fantastic, and such special family time!

Disclaimer – we were given a weekend away in exchange for an honest review.
